What exactly is Hypnobirthing?

the oldest form of psychotherapy

Hypnobirthing isn’t dangling clocks or airy fairy crystal ceremonies (even though that’s often what the word hypno makes you think of). Somewhere along the way, hypnosis got picked up by the entertainment industry, but in reality, it's the oldest form of psychotherapy. And in the context of birth, it's powerful.

AN ANTENATAL EDUCATION

At its core, hypnobirthing is antenatal education, but one that starts with your mind. It’s about understanding what your body is doing in labour, how your hormones work, and how your brain massively influences your birth experience.

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE

We live in a culture where birth is often portrayed as dramatic, traumatic, and medicalised. We’re bombarded with horror stories, emergency scenes on TV, and language that makes us feel like birth is something to fear. So many people walk into labour believing they just need to do as they’re told and hope for the best. And sadly, that’s often where trauma starts.

Hypnobirthing flips that.

What does a hypnobirthing course involve?

It’s about getting informed, learning how your mind-body connection can either support or stall your birth, and understanding your options fully. We dive into how your nervous system responds to fear, how to calm it, and how to work with your physiology to support your hormones.

No ‘perfect’ birth

It’s not about promising any one ‘perfect’ type of birth. Birth is unpredictable - mine certainly didn’t go exactly as planned. But because I was informed, I still felt empowered and calm every step of the way, even as plans changed. That’s what I want to pass on.
